St. Olaf Band: Celebrating The Classics
(WCD 29626)
When encountering the title "Celebrating the Classics," many listeners perhaps expect to find a compact disc filled with transcriptions of light orchestral works. Imagine their surprise when they hear this recording featuring the modern concert band! There was a time when the majority of the band's repertory consisted primarily of orchestral and operatic transcriptions, marches, and novelty pieces, with very few original works of enduring value. Times have changed. The "classics for band" on this recording represent but a small fraction of an ever-expanding band repertory -- a body of work which now contains valuable musical contributions from many of the world's most esteemed composers.

St. Olaf Band: A Musical Observance
(WCD 29623)
The first five works contained on this recording are typical of the programming presented annually by the St. Olaf Band. They are taken from the Homecoming Concert, the winter tour program, and the Alumni Concert, given during commencement weekend. The remaining works on the recording comprised the second half of the '95 winter tour program, which was shared with audiences in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The works were presented without pause, connected by narratives researched and written by band members. The music-making was certainly rewarding in and of itself on the tour -- it was not uncommon to hear soft crying in the audience during the Bukvich, Schuman, and Jager works. However, the contact with audience members after each performance will perhaps be remembered longer by the players, as interesting discussions ensued about personal experiences with World War II and the expressive power of music

St. Olaf Band: Faith
(WCD 29742)
During the 1996-97 concert season, the St. Olaf Band, under direction of Timothy Mahr, performed a variety of works providing witness to the saving grace of Christian faith. The season's highlight was the premier of Faith, a powerfully eloquent work by Andrew Boysen, Jr. that centers on Gods's omnipresence and omnipotence within a Christian's life. Written for the band's performance at the 1997 American Bandmasters Association National Convention, Faith subsequently has received great critical acclaim.
